Cephalexin Dosage:
This medication is usually taken by mouth, either a capsule or liquid suspension.
It is taken every 6 hours, four times a day, or every 12 hours, twice a day, taken for a week. Take as directed.
Do not take lesser or more than what is prescribed. Also, do not stop taking cephalexin even if feeling better.
Shake the medication to mix it well. Capsules or tablets must be swallowed whole with a full glass of water.
Missed Dose:
As soon as you remember the missed dose, take it. If the next dose is near, skip it then continue with the regular dose schedule. Do not double dose.
Storage:
Keep this in its container tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture.
Precautions and Warnings:
Prior to taking cephalexin:
- Inform health care provider regarding allergies to cephalexin and its components and other antibiotics such as penicillin
- Inform health care provider about other medications that are being taken
- Inform health care provider if planning to get pregnant as this can cross breast milk.
If surgery is planned, even if it is dental surgery, inform your doctor or dentist that cephalexin is being taken. Individuals with diabetes must be informed that this mediation may increase blood sugar.
Cephalexin side effects:
Cephalexin can cause some side effects, inform health care provider if any of these persists:
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Mild rash
- Upset stomach
These symptoms warrant emergency medical help:
- Severe skin rash
- Hives
- Itching
- Difficulty breathing
- Wheezing
- Unusual bleeding of bruising
- Vaginal infection
- Sore throat
